From The Trust Regarding APA’s Announcement

Please Note: In response to some questions we’ve received, just as has been true for many years, members of APA are not required to purchase products from APA’s preferred provider. Instead, decisions about which professional liability policy you purchase is a personal decision based on a number of important factors. Please also remember that The Trust does not require APA membership for a psychologist to be a policyholder.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding APA's Announcement

The Trust has been the preferred provider of professional liability insurance for the American Psychological Association, or APA, for the past five years. That endorsement was part of an agreement between The Trust and APA. As of July 1, 2018, the relationship between APA and The Trust has ended. The Trust was very interested in continuing its relationship with APA and presented several proposals which took into account APA’s membership numbers and the many ways that The Trust provides value to APA. Unfortunately, The Trust and APA could not come to an agreement on a number of terms, and APA decided to go with another company.

“We are proud of how our relationship with APA benefited psychologists,” says Jana N. Martin, Ph.D., CEO of The Trust, “and our consistent, strong support of state psychological associations through our endorsement program and our risk management workshops WILL continue. The state associations, which are not regulated by APA, are free to endorse and receive support from entities of their choice, and we are delighted to have 45 state psychological associations endorse The Trust! The Trust offers a ‘total package’ to psychologists. As a psychologist, I understand the needs we have and the challenges we face in our profession, and The Trust Board members, most of whom are also psychologists, focus on identifying and offering many essential and affordable products and programs. For example, I believe our risk management program is superior to anything else out there.”

The end of the agreement does not change The Trust’s goals or the products and services we offer. The Trust is chosen by more psychologists than any other provider. They choose us because of who we have proven ourselves to be, because of our wide range of quality products AND quality services, not just because we were APA’s preferred provider. Providing value, benefiting, and supporting the profession of psychology is paramount in everything we do, and we will continue to meet the needs of psychologists in ways that other companies cannot.

This includes:

  1. Offering the ‘total package’ of insurance and financial security products and tools in one location. It’s not just career protection, but entire life and family protection.
  2. Giving psychologists the choice of either claims-made or occurrence professional liability coverage, plus a free, unrestricted ‘tail’ with every claims-made policy upon retirement, death or disability.
  3. Unlimited free and confidential ethical and risk management advice from seasoned, licensed psychologists through the Advocate 800 Program.
  4. Decision-making about products and resources in addition to risk management services by psychologists who understand and are involved in your profession.
